After a brief but busy visit to the States for Christmas, I continued my vacation on the other side of the ocean! We spent a few hours of our very long (and middle of the night) layover in Istanbul smoking shisha under the cover of a warm blanket in a candlelit cafe, and then flew to Cape Town to enjoy the city for New Year's Eve.
Although Cape Town was stunning, it was also quite scary and a bit dangerous in the dodgy dark corners so we had to be on high alert whenever we left our hostel on Long Street. Most of our days were spent wandering through city blocks to soak up the street performers, parades and cultural diversity that was all around.
We rang in the New Year at a rooftop party lit by the sparkling night sky, and had so much fun we decided to stay up to watch the sunrise over the skyline of Table Mountain. It was, without a doubt, the best New Years I've had in my life (so far)... and I'm looking forward to trying to top it next year!
We took the train all the way down the coast to Simons Town, where penguins fearlessly roam the beaches unattended. The ocean water was just the right temperature to be a welcome relief from the sun, but most of the day was spent exploring the town.
Unfortunately we didn't have much time to explore Cape Town the way it properly should; there is so much to see and do, I could spend a year there and probably never fall bored! Another trip will be planned in my future, I'm sure.
